History of the College of Chemistry
In 1952, Cai Liusheng (professor in physical chemistry), Tang Aoqing (professor in theoretical chemistry), Guan Shizhi (professor in inorganic chemistry), and Tao Weisun (professor in biochemistry) came to Changchun, and led a dozen young teachers, fresh graduates, and lab technicians to found the Chemistry Department at the Northeast People抯 University, which later became the Chemistry Department at JLU. Professor Cai Liusheng was the first department head.
The Department emphasized training of students on fundamental theories, knowledge, and skills since its early days. The faculty started from scratch, overcame all sorts of difficulties, made used of what were available, to start several lab courses. The four leading professors each established a group and began their research work. Professor Tang and Professor Cai admitted their first graduate students in 1953, establishing one of the first graduate programs in the country. They were elected academicians of the CAS in 1955 and 1957, respectively. In 1959 Professor Tao Weisun established the biochemistry program, which was a milestone in the development of biochemistry in China. Professor Tang Aoqing presided the 揚olymer Physics and Chemistry?and 揗aterial Structure?workshops, which helped train a group of high level experts.
Since the 1980s, the Department has grown rapidly. Professors Sun Jiazhong, Jiang Yuansheng, Xu Ruren, and Shen Jiacong were elected academicians of the CAS in 1991. Under their leadership, the chemistry faculty paid attentions to both teaching and research. In the past decade they received 29 awards for teaching excellence, including 4 national awards. The undergraduate programs include chemistry, polymer material and engineering, materials chemistry, applied chemistry, and chemical engineering and technology. The MS programs disrupted by the Cultural Revolution were resumed and expanded to cover inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, polymer chemistry and physics, environmental chemistry, biochemistry, and applied chemistry. Since 1981 the department was accredited to award PhD degrees in physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry and physics, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry. The students graduated from the Chemistry at JLU since its first class include 8830 bachelors, 1420 masters, and 432 PhD抯. Current enrollment includes 1050 undergraduate students and 814 graduate students, 326 of which PhD candidates.
Of equal importance to the College of Chemistry is scientific research, including fundamental research, applied research, and hi-tech R&D. In the past decade, the College received a total of 130 million research grants from NSFC, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), and other funding agencies. Currently the College brings in more than 20 million grants every year in average. The faculty has published more than 7600 research papers since 1980. Research achievements include 7 National Natural Science Awards, 2 of which top prizes, and 7 National Invention Awards.

Many prestigious scholars have been appointed its honorary professors, guest professors, and adjunct professors. Hundreds of internationally renowned scholars have been invited to lecture and attend discussions. Selected faculty members have gone overseas for study or research collaboration. As for now most of the faculty members have experience of either studying or working abroad. Our faculty members have been appointed editors of 10 internationally recognized scientific journals, elected chairs of international conferences and committee members of international academic organizations. They have given invited presentations in international conferences and written reviews for professional journals.
The size of the faculty has grown from 26 in the early days to 336 as of today, 5 of which academicians of the CAS, 1 fellow of the American Academy of Sciences and Nobel Prize winner, 107 professors, and 56 associated professors. Five members are middle-aged experts with outstanding contribution to the nation, 5 awarded the Changjiang Professorship, 9 received National Outstanding Young Researcher Award, and 9 were the Chinese Chemical Society Young Chemist Prize winners.
Among the research organizations based in the College, State Key Laboratory of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, State Key Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Preparation Chemistry, and MOE Key Laboratory of Supramolecular Structure and Materials all passed the state audit in 1999, the inorganic lab with an excellent score. Over the years the Chemistry at JLU has received support and funding from MOST, MOE, NSFC, the Jilin provincial government, and the JLU, with which many advanced research instruments were purchased. The equipment assets of the College are valued at over 150 million.
In May 2001, the chemistry programs at the 5 universities (that form the new JLU) were reorganized to form the College of Chemistry. This has resulted in more efficient utilization of the available resources, and made the Chemistry at JLU more competitive. Today抯 Chemistry at JLU is the accumulation of the work by generations of scientists, who have developed a tradition of team work, and a tradition of working hard and down-to-earth spirit. The unselfish contributions by the members to this organization, and the honor of being part of it have been what attract people here and make it a better place.
