"Jilin University-1" Satellite Marks One Year of Successful On-Orbit Operations

2025-09-25

September 24, 2025 marks the first anniversary of the stable in-orbit operation of the "Jilin University-1" Satellite (Jitian Star A-01). China's first commercial optical remote sensing satellite capable of non-orbit-following moving-target imaging along arbitrary curves, it can can capture over 1,000 kilometers in a single pass, meeting internationally advanced standards. Over the past year, the satellite has completed 1,767 imaging tasks, acquired over 80,000 high-quality remote sensing images, and traveled a cumulative distance of nearly 2.194 billion kilometers.

The progress of the "Jilin University-1" satellite project was achieved by collaboration between academia and private industry. The project was led by Prof. Zhang Liu from the team of Academician Lin Jun at Jilin University's College of Instrumentation and Electrical Engineering. This team was founded on June 2021 through the cooperation of Jilin University and ARGO Space Technology Co., Ltd.

Looking ahead, the team plans to deploy a high-performance remote sensing constellation capable of daily global coverage, hourly revisits, sub-meter resolution, and hyperspectral imaging. This system will significantly strengthen global monitoring capabilities and meet the growing demand for high-frequency, high-precision data in areas such as water resource management and ecological conservation.
