ZHANG Xi, President of Jilin University (JLU), met with Hartmut Michel, the 1988 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, and his delegation on Sept 18, 2023.

The two sides engaged in a discussion, exploring opportunities for deeper and more practical collaboration across relevant academic fields.

ZHANG expressed gratitude for Michel's visit and looked forward to more participation from exceptional young teachers and students from China and Germany in future collaborations. He encouraged Michel to share insights that could enhance the university's development and laboratory infrastructure, helping cultivate top talent and foster a more open innovation ecosystem.

Michel appreciated JLU's invitation and expressed eagerness to collaborate with the university's research teams. He aimed to expand joint graduate training, share international cooperation resources, and engage more outstanding young scholars from the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Biophysical Chemistry in collaborative research and talent development.

Hartmut Michel is a professor at the MPI for Biophysical Chemistry and a member of the European Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on the structure and function of membrane proteins in living organisms. He has developed methods for crystallizing these proteins, which are applicable in various medical fields.
