On November 21, the lists of newly elected academicians for 2025 of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering were released. Prof. Fausto Giunchiglia was elected as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Pavel Talalay was elected as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Introduction to Fausto Giunchiglia
Fausto Giunchiglia, an Italian national, is currently a Tang Aoqing Professor and PhD supervisor at Jilin University. He serves as Chief Scientist in Artificial Intelligence at the Joint Laboratory of the International Center of Future Science, Jilin University, and as Foreign Director of the Ministry of Education Joint International Research Laboratory of Ageing Active Strategy and Bionic Health in Northeast Asia at Jilin University. He is also a recipient of the Jilin Province “Changbai Mountain Talent Program.”
He previously served as President of the Board of Trustees of IJCAI and as Vice Rector of the University of Trento, Italy. He was elected a Member of the Academia Europaea in 2012 and was elected a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2025.
Prof. Fausto Giunchiglia has long been dedicated to research in artificial intelligence. He has proposed and developed key AI methodologies and applications, including semantic matching, cross-lingual knowledge integration, and cross-cultural human activity sensing. He initiated and led European Union research programs on smart society and human-centered AI, and spearheaded the international open-science data initiative DataScientia. Prof. Giunchiglia was among the first scholars to advocate for and actively promote China–Europe collaborative research in the field of “AI + Culture.” He received the Chinese Government Friendship Award in 2024.

Prof. Pavel Talalay
Introduction to Pavel Talalay
Pavel Talalay, a Russian national and national-level leading talent, is currently a Professor and PhD supervisor at the College of Construction Engineering, Jilin University. He serves as Director of the Polar Research Center of JLU and Director of the Institute for Polar Science and Engineering. He is a world-renowned expert in polar drilling. He was elected an Academician of the Russian Academy of Mining Sciences and the Russian Ecological Academy in 2024, and became a Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2025.
Prof. Talalay has long been engaged in research on drilling technologies for polar glaciers, subglacial bedrock coring, permafrost drilling, and marine sediment sampling. Over the course of his career, he has published more than 100 research papers, obtained 56 authorized patents, and authored 20 textbooks. He has been a full-time faculty member at Jilin University since 2010 and received the Chinese Government Friendship Award in 2014.
