Professor Artem R. Oganov, an academician of the Academia Europaea and professor at both the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, was invited to Jilin University (JLU) to give a lecture on July 30, 2024 as part of the Dingxin Lecture Series.
The lecture was hosted by Jilin University Association for Science and Technology, and co-organized by the College of Physics, State Key Laboratory of Superhard Materials, and Key Laboratory of Material Simulation Methods & Software, MOE.

Titled “Predicting and rationalizing new chemical compounds and phenomena”, Professor Oganov’s lecture attracted over 100 students and faculty members from both within and outside the university.
During his presentation, Oganov reviewed the innovative achievements made in collaboration with the research team from JLU College of Physics, focusing on the new structures and properties of condensed matter systems under extreme conditions.
He also discussed the application of crystal structure prediction in discovering stable novel compounds and unveiling novel physical phenomena, and shared key challenges and innovative strategies for explaining phenomena under high pressure using concepts such as electronegativity and chemical hardness.

Professor MA Yanming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Vice President of the university, presided at the lecture. He awarded Professor Oganov the “Dingxin Lecture Commemorative Plaque” and lauded his significant contributions to the fields of crystal structure prediction and computational new materials.
Early in 2009, MA’s research team collaborated with Oganov and discovered the “anti-Wilson transition”, where sodium transitions from metal to insulator under high pressure. This breakthrough in the traditional field of solid-state high-pressure metalization was published in Nature.
