Jilin University (JLU) became the only Chinese university to join the University of the Arctic (UArctic) at the 2023 UArctic Assembly held in Quebec City, Canada, on May 22-26.
UArctic was established on June 12, 2001, under the leadership of the Arctic Council. Headquartered in Finland, it’s a network of universities and research institutions from Arctic and non-Arctic countries. It now includes 245 member institutions, 12 of which are from China.
JLU stands out in polar research, focusing on key areas such as ice sheets and glaciers, subglacial environments, and climate change.
Membership in UArctic will strengthen JLU's international collaboration with other member institutions, promote resource sharing, and provide a platform for JLU’s faculty and students to participate in global academic networks, collaborative research, and educational initiatives. This is a significant step toward enhancing the university's global academic standing.
